The symphony orchestra "musicAeterna" together with maestro Teodor Currentzis is preparing to delight residents and guests of St. Petersburg with its performance
The works of Mahler, whom Currentzis became acquainted with back in 2011, when he became the head of the Perm Opera, became a central part of the repertoire of his orchestra and choir. Mahler, an unrivaled humanist composer, repeatedly addressed eternal themes in his works: life and death, war and love, faith and the search for God. The Second Symphony, initially conceived as a separate symphonic poem called "Funeral Funeral", was a response to the death of the composer's close friend and mentor, Gustav von Bülow. Only by 1893-1894 did the final concept of the five-movement masterpiece emerge, which left an indelible mark on the history of world music.
The title of the symphony is inspired by lines from Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock's spiritual song "You Will Resurrection", which was performed at Bülow's funeral. Mahler added his own lines to these lines: “Believe, my heart, oh believe: nothing is lost to you…”, which became a magnificent conclusion to his work. Performing this musical canvas is a difficult task even for modern ensembles, but Currentzis and his “musicAeterna” cope with it masterfully. The maestro also repeatedly turned to Mozart’s operas, Bruckner’s symphonies and Respighi’s poems, giving them a new sound.
Mahler’s symphonies performed by Currentzis and his orchestra are real musical magic, requiring the highest skill from the musicians. The “musicAeterna” orchestra is unique in its ability to convey all the shades of joy, sadness, love and hope that are intertwined in every movement of the symphony. Despite its complexity, this piece remains one of the most popular in Mahler's work.
By attending a concert by Teodor Currentzis and "musicAeterna" at the Shostakovich Philharmonic, you will have a unique opportunity to enjoy the depth and beauty of the work of the great Austrian composer, which continues to excite and inspire listeners many years later.
