Teodor Currentzis: Concert Poster for June 2025
Teodor Currentzis is more than just a conductor. Each of his performances becomes a dramatic event, where the main roles are played by emotional expression, unbridled passion for music and innovative experiments. Despite his Greek roots, Currentzis’s life and work have been inseparable from Russia for the last three decades. Music captivated him as a child: he learned to play the violin and piano, and later received an education in his homeland. However, his real creative takeoff began in the mid-1990s, when he came to Russia to study conducting with the legendary Ilya Musin at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.
In 2004, Currentzis became the head of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater. Seven years later, he made another breakthrough, becoming the artistic director of the Perm Theater. In eight years, the maestro has turned Perm into the third musical center of Russia, along with Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Currentzis is not only a conductor, but also a cultural missionary. He is a co-founder of the Territory Festival, artistic director of the Diaghilev Festival, and in 2022 he created the Utopia Orchestra, an international ensemble of 28 musicians. His ambitious projects break the boundaries of genres: from the reconstruction of baroque operas to the premieres of modern compositions. Currentzis's main creation is the musicAeterna orchestra. It is famous for its impeccable craftsmanship, bold interpretations, and reverent attitude to the classics. Each performance of the ensemble, be it in Russia, Europe, or Asia, is a dialogue with time, where even familiar notes acquire a new, provocative sound. Teodor Currentzis continues to surprise: his concerts are not a performance, but a rethinking. He proves that even in the digital age, an orchestra can be a medium through which the souls of composers, musicians and time itself speak.
This summer, all music lovers will enjoy a rich program created by Teodor Currentzis himself.
On June 13 and 14, 2025, a concert of musicAeterna and Teodor Currentzis – Hændel will take place at the Perm House of Music (former Shpagin Plant). The evening's program brings together key masterpieces by George Frideric Handel: from piercing arias to monumental choral fragments from his operas and oratorios. A special feature of the performance is the use of authentic 18th century instruments that recreate the timbres heard by the composer's contemporaries. This is not just a concert, but a sound reconstruction, where every note breathes the spirit of the Baroque. The semi-stage format is complemented by visual metaphors: a dynamic play of shadows, moving scenery and lighting accents turn the performance into a multifaceted event. You will find yourself in the bizarre world of Handel's extravaganza - between reality and illusion, where the dramaturgy of music is enhanced by plasticity and symbolic images. The concert puts an end to the debate about whether early music can be relevant. The answer is yes, if it is interpreted by a team for whom authenticity is not a museum exhibit, but a living language.
On June 17, the concert "Bach and Jazz" will take place in the Great Hall of the Perm Philharmonic. The first part of the evening is a dialogue with the era of Bach. You will enjoy chorale preludes, as if woven from silence, and arias from cantatas, where each note becomes a confession of the soul. The music sounds authentic, preserving the strictness of form and the depth of the Baroque style.
In the second part, the concert is transformed: jazz standards - from Gershwin to Coltrane - are presented in unexpected arrangements. The group experiments with rhythms, harmonies and improvisation, turning familiar melodies into a bold musical performance. The special charm is that all the arrangements were created specifically for this line-up, emphasizing its unique acoustic palette.
