The Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre will host a performance by Teodor Currentzis together with the orchestra and choir "musicAeterna"
From 2011 to 2019, Teodor Currentzis served as artistic director of the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre. However, he left this position to fully focus on the development of the Diaghilev Festival and the improvement of the "musicAeterna" ensemble. The main reason for his departure was the lack of a new stage: instead of the promised three new venues, he was offered to use the old stage, which had been functioning since 1874. Its size limited the capabilities of the orchestra and choir, and there were also problems with acoustics and technical equipment, which made it difficult to stage modern operas and ballets. For comparison, the "musicAeterna" orchestra has more than 80 musicians, and Currentzis also created a large choir and dance troupe.
Although the issue with a new stage at the theater has now been resolved, Currentzis is returning to Perm as part of a tour to perform a work included in the orchestra's repertoire for the first time under his direction. Since then, Mahler's compositions have become an integral part of their program, and so the tour begins with Symphony No. 2, also known as "Resurrection". This work reflects key philosophical questions such as the search for God, the fear of death and its acceptance, and the grief over the loss of friend and teacher Hans von Bülow.
Gustav Mahler, known as a humanist composer, touches upon the most important issues of his time, filled with social contradictions, in his works. The text for the final chorus of the second symphony was found by Mahler at Bülow's funeral and is based on Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock's spiritual song "You will rise again". Thanks to this, the symphony was named "Resurrection", and Mahler left an indelible mark on the history of world and sacred music.
Fans of classical music have a unique opportunity to purchase tickets to the concert of Teodor Currentzis and "musicAeterna" at the Perm Opera and Ballet Theater to enjoy the performance of one of the most impressive and complex works of the Austrian composer.
