Teodor Currentzis and musicAeterna: Concert in Saratov based on a work by Schnittke
On September 11, the long-awaited concert by Theodor Currentzis and the musicAeterna Choir will take place at the Saratov State Conservatory named after L. V. Sobinov. The program includes a work by Alfred Schnittke based on poems by Grigor Narekatsi from the Book of Mournful Hymns.
Grigor Narekatsi is an outstanding Armenian poet, philosopher and theologian who lived at the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries. His "Book of Mournful Hymns" is one of the most important works of Christian literature. The Concerto for Mixed Choir a cappella, composed by Schnittke in 1984-1985, is based on the third chapter of this poem. The texts of the Narekatsi are a prayer for all mankind: villains and saints, rich and poor, those who have lost hope, and those who believe sincerely and with all their soul.
The concerto consists of four parts, which corresponds to the structure of the original text. Alfred Schnittke, being a deeply religious man, put his spiritual searches and experiences into this work. The premiere performance of the concert in the version of Currentzis and choirmaster Vitaly Polonsky took place in the mid-2000s. Since then, the musicAeterna choir has presented this work in many cities, including Yerevan, where the concert was a great success.
