Teodor Currentzis: New Projects, Festivals, and the Search for a Different Musical Language
Over the course of two decades, the ensemble has evolved from a Novosibirsk-based project into an international collective with its own creative residence in St. Petersburg. In 2026, Teodor Currentzis continued to work across several domains—ranging from historically informed performance to contemporary forms of musical theater.
A notable highlight of the spring was a program dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Hungarian composer György Kurtág. In it, musicAeterna juxtaposed the works of Kurtág and Brahms, once again demonstrating the conductor’s penchant for curating programs based not merely on chronology, but on an intrinsic, meaningful dialogue between the pieces. Another significant project this year was a new iteration of the program "Rameau: The Sound of Light – 2," which integrates French Baroque music with staged action, choreography, and a distinct directorial vision. The project was presented in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and at the Diaghilev Festival in Perm—an event for which Currentzis has served as artistic director since 2012. This very production served as the closing act of the 2026 festival.
A distinct facet of the conductor’s work is his support for young performers.
Artists from the Anton Rubinstein Academy—a new educational initiative for vocalists launched by Currentzis—are increasingly participating in musicAeterna’s projects. These young soloists are already appearing on stage alongside the orchestra and choir in major programs, including those dedicated to the works of Handel and Rameau. In the autumn of 2026, musicAeterna, under the direction of Currentzis, once again undertook an extensive international tour. In Shanghai and Beijing, the ensemble performed works by Mozart and Beethoven, utilizing period-appropriate tuning and 18th-century instruments. For Currentzis, the classical repertoire remains not a rigid, immutable canon, but rather a foundation for fresh interpretation. His projects in 2026 highlight several key areas of development: engagement with both Baroque and contemporary music, international touring, work in musical theater, and the cultivation of an environment for a new generation of performers.
