Rubinstein's Piano Concerto No. 4 was received with thunderous applause by the public back in 1864, after which it enjoyed wide success in European countries throughout the nineteenth century. The influence of this work can be felt in the work of both the piano concertos created by Rubinstein's student Tchaikovsky and his critic Balakirev. It is no coincidence that this work was included in Sergei Rachmaninoff's concert programs. In the romantic virtuosity of Rubinstein's piano concerto, in its sad undertones and the exciting development of the first movement, one can hear harbingers of Rachmaninoff's future: that is why he spoke with such admiration of the mastery of his senior colleague.
Maurice Ravel created two orchestral suites based on the music for the ballet Daphnis and Chloe long before its premiere. The second suite includes the entire third scene of the ballet: "Dawn", "Pantomime", "General Dance". They depict the awakening of nature and feelings through rich orchestral sounds. "Waltz", created for Sergei Diaghilev's troupe, was completed only after the First World War. This poem in dance, inspired by the legacy of Johann Strauss, reveals the dark aspects of unrestrained danceability: "My concept of the Viennese waltz is mixed with a sense of a fantastic and fatal whirlwind," the composer Ravel himself explained.
Ottorino Respighi's symphonic poem "Pines of Rome" consists of four parts and contains a bright program, which the composer is not shy about revealing. In the second part of "Pines of the Villa Borghese", Respighi depicts a scene with children playing soldiers with the help of the orchestra's musical instruments. "Pines of the Catacombs" is a romantic picture of early Christian worship, with elements of Gregorian chant. The third movement, "Pines of the Janiculum Hill", inspired by dawn nature and sensual excitement, recalls Ravel's Daphnis, but Respighi goes even further, for the first time in the history of music including a recording of a nightingale in the score.
The majestic march of the Roman soldiers sounds in "Pines of Appia" with such brightness and darkness that the ears are filled with the threatening sounds of the bucina, recreated from ancient trumpets and included in the musical performance. The legion marches in front, creating an impression of grandeur and power, accompanied by sonorous chords and rhythms.
