The Great Hall of the Shostakovich Philharmonic
On April 3, 2026, the St. Petersburg stage of the Shostakovich Philharmonic will host an unusual performance prepared by renowned conductor Teodor Currentzis together with the orchestra and choir musicAeterna. Audiences can expect a musical experiment that combines classical repertoire with modern artistic approaches.
The year 2026 marks an important date — the centenary of Hungarian composer György Kurtág, whose musical works have attracted special attention in the European cultural scene. In honor of this anniversary, musicAeterna will present two rare compositions exploring the theme of human experience. Each work features an original instrumental and vocal arrangement.
First, the audience will hear a staged performance of the vocal cycle “Songs of Despair and Sorrow,” based on the poetry of Russian writers of the 19th–20th centuries (Lermontov, Blok, Akhmatova, Mandelstam, Tsvetaeva). The cycle is enriched with the sound of unique instruments such as the harmonium, accordion, and celesta. The next piece will be the chamber instrumental cycle “Stele for Stefan,” also composed by Kurtág. To achieve a special acoustic effect, instrumental groups are placed in different parts of the stage.
The program will conclude with the famous “German Requiem” by Johannes Brahms. This work was written under the influence of the composer’s personal experiences. Originally conceived as spiritual consolation, the Requiem was first performed in full in 1868 and quickly gained recognition. The texts of the movements were selected by the composer from the Lutheran translation of the Bible, giving the cycle deep meaning.
