Saint Petersburg, The Great Hall of the Shostakovich Philharmonic
Description
The Great Hall of the D.D. Shostakovich Philharmonic is bright, spacious, and has excellent acoustics. It can accommodate up to 1,500 visitors. Since the end of the 19th century, it has been the center of musical and cultural life in St. Petersburg.
K. Schumann, P. Viardot, F. Liszt, R. Wagner, G. Berlioz, and G. Mahler have repeatedly performed on its stage. Publishing activities were carried out in the building of the Philharmonic, and there was a library. There is a library here today.
On June 12, 1921, the Philharmonic officially opened in Petrograd. The best works of the classics and contemporaries of the 20th century were performed within its walls.
In 1926, the first symphonies of D.D. Shostakovich were performed here, and in the 1930s, he himself came here from Moscow to present his works to the public. Many years later, the Philharmonic was named after the great composer.
The Grand Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic named after D.D. Shostakovich is rightfully considered one of the best concert halls in Europe. Modern musicians consider it a great honor to perform there.
In 2007, the building was carefully restored. In the Grand Hall, restorers recreated the interior from the time of the Nobility Assembly. In the Beethoven Foyer, visitors admire portraits of great composers. The entrance to the building is equipped with special ramps, thanks to which people with disabilities can enjoy classical music.
