The musicAeterna Orchestra, under the baton of conductor Teodor Currentzis, will present a program of works by Viennese classical composers on the stage of the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. Based in St. Petersburg, the ensemble has earned a reputation as one of the most vibrant musical phenomena in contemporary Russia, and its live performances have long been a benchmark for connoisseurs of classical music.
The first half will feature Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, written in the key of A major. musicAeterna has frequently performed this work: it was performed at the Salzburg Festival and was recorded on the Sony Classical label. In the second half, listeners will hear the overture to "The Marriage of Figaro" and Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23—a work in which a virtuoso piano part is intertwined with subtle orchestral accompaniment.
The main feature of musicAeterna is performance on period instruments in the authentic tuning of A=430 Hz. This approach allows us to recreate a sound close to what Beethoven and Mozart's contemporaries heard. The timbral colors of period instruments give the music a transparency and depth unattainable with modern instrumentation.
