Description
The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Herodion is located on the southern slope of the Acropolis. Herodes Atticus built the Odeon in 165 AD. e. in honor of his late wife Regilla.
The Odeon has the classic shape of an ancient theater with 5,000 seats, in which almost everything from the time of construction has been preserved to this day, with the exception of statues in niches and multi-colored marble cladding. You can only get inside during concerts and performances by paying for a ticket.
The marble cladding of the audience seats and stage was restored in the 1950s. Since then, the Odeon has been one of the main stages of the annual Athens Festival, held in the Greek capital from June to September. Maria Callas, the Bolshoi Ballet, Mikis Theodorakis, Nikos Portokaloglou and many others performed on the stage of the Odeon.
On July 21, 1973, the international beauty contest “Miss Universe 1973” was held at the Odeon, where the granddaughter of the fifth President of the Philippines, Maria Margarita Rojas Moran-Floirendo, won
